Noxious invasive weed control grants available – due 7/27

The Oregon State Weed Board is now accepting applications for noxious invasive weed control projects on both private and public lands. Eligible applicants include private landowners, counties, weed management areas, soil and water conservation districts, and watershed councils. No state or federal agency can apply for funds but can be a cooperator on successfully-awarded projects.

The deadline for grant applications is July 27, 2007. The State Weed Board will be awarding grants for the current round of funding in its September meeting.

The Oregon Legislature has recently increased the amount of funding for the grant program by $1 million for the 2007-09 biennium, bringing the total amount of funds available for the next two years to $2.5 million. The additional funding allows the State Weed Board to allocate an estimated 40 additional projects this biennium to help private and public land managers implement or continue watershed projects statewide that help meet the objectives of the Oregon Noxious Weed Strategic Plan. The grant program is in its fourth biennium with 378 grants awarded by the board to date totaling $4.4 million.

Noxious invasive weeds continue to impact agricultural land, forests, and natural areas causing severe production losses, increased control costs, and negative impacts to watershds. A conservative assessment doents an impact of more than $83 million in annual losses to Oregon's economy due to noxious weeds.

For more information, contact Shannon Brubaker, grants coordinator with the Oregon Department of Agriculture, at (503) 986-4621, sbrubake@oda.state.or.us

Hello,

I work at a non-profit called the Agri-Business Council of Oregon.  We are sponsoring an event called "Ag Fest" in Salem this April. Ag Fest is a "two-day, hands-on, activity-filled festival held at the Oregon State Fairgrounds (www.oragfest.com).  At our booth, we've designed a game where children will roll dice to determine where they land on a map of Oregon divided into the 6 agricultural growing regions in the State.  Depending where they land, they receive a sample with a card attached with information about that commodity.

I'm looking for a grower who might consider giving us a discount or donating dried cranberries for the game to represent the Coastal Region.  If anyone has ideas or can point me in the direction of where to get the best price, I would greatly appreciate it.  I'm not sure how many pounds I need, but they say 20,000 people attend the event.  I figure if 15,000 of them visit our booth, and 1/6 of them "land" in the Coastal region, we would need small samples for about 2,500 people.

Sincerely,
Jenny Sullivan

Hello,

I organize a farmers market in Boise, Idaho.  Every year we have a
holiday seasonal market at which we sell fresh cranberries and
cranberry goods. I am interested in buying 200lbs of fresh cranberries
for this season.  My normal supply is Faber Farms, but they are unable
to supply us this year to do reasons out of their control.

I need to have them here by November 15th- in the past they have been
shipped via UPS.  I don't know what your policy is on shipping, but
please let me know if this is possible, and what your current rate per
pound for that quantity of cranberries is.

Thank you very much,

Addis Manley

Hello,
I work for the Capital City Public Market in Boise Idaho and we are very interested in buying cranberries in bulk for our holiday market.  In the past years we have purchased from two Oregon farms, but this year they are unable to accomodate us.  We would love to buy fresh and also dried cranberries.  Please let me know what you have and what you would be able to sell us.  Thank you so much for your time.  If you need to call for any reason our office number is 208.345.9287.
